About the Artist

Detroit-based artist Ellie Braun originally got her BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a concentration in animation and graphic design. After graduating, Ellie shifted her focus to textiles and other physical materials. This shift allowed for her abstract and other-worldy work to find a home in physical space. Ellie is interested in creating her own reality and environment through her artwork.

Artist Statement

My work explores a building of a sanctuary, a place completely within my control. It nods to the childhood questioning of why things are the way they are. Using familiar shapes and home items, it subverts the idea of what the ideas of home and space are. It questions why things were designed a certain way. I use a variety of textures and materials to create a multi-dimensional world. I frequent the use of sequins and other sparkly items to enhance the dreamscape of the world I am creating. By layers materials and colors, I create a complex narrative for the viewer to experience. These works allow me to create my own structure and reality rather than accept the one that is already there. I create and re-create a sense of warmth, comfort, and curiosity. I think about what kind of a space a kid would want to grow up in, one that knows no bounds and allows for imagination to run freely. Constructing a space where you can dream big about the world that you want to create, beyond the constructs that have already been made up for us. A world that is free from outside influences and offers a solace in the mundanity of the every day.
